Schiavi D’Abruzzo, with its 1172 meters above sea level, is the highest town of the Vastese area, and lies a few meters away from the peak of Monte Pizzuto.
By reaching the residential area through the road that starts from the valley bottom of the river Trigno, you will see a sequence of wide landscapes and segments of town that run along the road, characterized by trees and typical houses of the Abruzzo mountain area.
Places in which it’s still possible to find traces of ancient habits and traditions, deeply rooted in the soul of those who live there.
This land hold thousands of years of history. The first traces of human presence date back to the Bronze age (from 3500 to 1200 B.C.), but it is since the Sannite era, and the following romanization, that the territory lives its first phase of great vitality.
The origin of the name “Schiavi D’Abruzzo” refers to events rich in suggestions. According to some, the name comes from the presence of troops of rebel slaves lead by Spartacus in 70 A.D., while, according to other sources, the name comes from the establishment of Slavic inhabitants in the area.
Several archaeological discoveries witness, nowadays, this thousand-year old past. First among all is the sacred area of the “Templi Italici” where it is possible to visit the remains of the two sannite temples.
As the centuries went by, the inhabited area developed under the influence of several historical events, turning itself into a fortified medieval village.
Walking around Schiavi D’Abruzzo, you can feel how history went through and influenced these places with the diligence and the brilliance of its inhabitants. You can’t not be charmed by the colors and the shapes that were given to the stones of these mountains, turning them into houses, churches, streets, arches and fountains.
During your stay in Schiavi D’Abruzzo we recommend you to visit the historical center of the town, with its typical architecture, the Church of San Maurizio which dominates the town from the peak, and the archaeological museum.
